LINDEN — Linden High School’s NJROTC Unit and NJROTC Parent Boosters Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 27, at the John T. Gregorio Recreation Center from 5-8 p.m. The tickets are $10 each and the proceeds will go to help fund the George Dorin Memorial Scholarships and the Police Officer Mark Evan Memorial Community Service Scholarships.
Dorin joined the United States Army right out of high school, and served in the European Theater during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he was taken prisoner. Upon his return home after the war, he became active in community affairs, served on the Linden Board of Education and was instrumental in establishing the Linden High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps NJROTC program.
Dorin maintained a strong interest in service to the Linden Community, and in particular to its schools and the Linden High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps NJROTC program. A scholarship is given each year to a graduating senior male and female in the the NJROTC program who has distinguished themself in school despite having to overcome personal adversity.
Linden Police Officer Mark Evan Community Service Scholarship was established in memory of Evan after he passed away this summer following a battle with cancer. Through his service as a police officer, as a youth baseball coach, as a leader in his church, in the Knights of Columbus, and as President of the Linden High School NJROTC Parent Boosters Club, Officer Evan helped improve the lives of Linden’s citizens. His dedicated service to the young people of Linden participating in the NJROTC program set a great example of how ordinary people so often do extraordinary things. A scholarship will be given each year to a male and female graduating senior who has achieved academic success while also setting an example of dedicated service to the community of Linden.
Individuals wishing to make contributions to either scholarship fund may do so by contacting CDR Murphy at 908-486-8462
