Women are notorious for being overly self-critical of themselves and of other women. Men are not immune from this, but women are the clear winners here. Maybe that’s because we compare ourselves to Angelina Jolie, bony supermodels and every other woman we see in the course of our day.
In a split second, we send ourselves negative messages that tell us we aren’t as attractive as that woman over there. We magnify our imperfections and downplay our many excellent qualities.
Shopping can be a nightmare for some women. There’s something about clothes labeled ‘missy’ that just doesn’t ring right when compared to ‘junior’ or ‘petite’. Many a woman has been brought to tears as she realizes her own body has turned against her and she is now shopping in the land of double digit sizes. When did this happen? Boo hoo hoo. Who cares?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? Remember Twiggy? She’s a thing of the past now and from recent pictures of her that I have seen, well, she packed on a few pounds herself. If she took a tumble, what hope is there for the rest of us mortals? Go, enjoy a cheeseburger.
But what if numbers were taken out of the size selection and substituted with adjectives instead? Let’s say that the old size 12’s might now be labeled, ‘perky’. Size 14’s might become ‘vivacious’ and the 2 X’s could very well be known as ‘bootylicious’. You get the idea. What woman wouldn’t want to be perky, vivacious or bootylicious? See, it’s all a mind game, making shopping enjoyable once again!
We women need to take our own advice and be kinder to ourselves. We need new role models who reflect how mature women look and feel and are portrayed on TV. We need to remember that one designer’s size 16 is another’s size 12. One brand’s extra large is another’s medium. And in the course of our entire life, what size we are is really small potatoes.
Speaking of potatoes, order fries with that cheeseburger.
