CLARK — Seventh grade students in Christina Faro’s mathematics classes at Carl. H. Kumpf Middle School are beginning the year by participating in various group-centered activities. On the first day of class, Faro had her students fill out a survey asking about their favorite parts of math and the areas they felt needed to be reviewed. Many students said they needed a refresher on greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple(LCM).
Faro had her students break into pairs and create an example of a factor tree. Students were given construction paper, popsicle sticks and markers to complete their trees. Many of the students found the visual display of the information to be helpful and were able to recollect the methods for solving GCF and LCM.In the photo above, Danielle Mitchell and Nicole Pecoraro display their factor tree with the LCM and GCF labeled.
