Remembering Perth Amboy’s Past

by Diane Norek Harrison

PERTH AMBOY-“During the week of July 15, they were grinding the old pavement off the street on New Brunswick Avenue in Perth Amboy by the new Municipal Complex. On July 17, I found the old original ‘brick pavers’ still down, that the old horse and buggy clackey clacked on down the street in town. They must be over 140 years old and date to post Civil War era. I wonder how many streets in Perth Amboy still have their brick pavers intact and paved? On Smith Street too, you can see the old road sewers and can see how over the years the roads have elevated due to paving.” (Picture and information courtesy of Gerard Trabalka)

If anyone in the area knows where there are still remains of things from long ago please let me know to be included in my column. Old pictures of the area, with captions, are always welcome. Please email me at
