CLARK — U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) will formally endorse Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan at a 12:30 p.m. rally in Clark on Friday, Sept. 13 according to the Lonegan campaign.

A potential 2016 candidate for president and the son of Texas Congressman Ron Paul, the Kentucky Senator has staked out a base among the the utlra-conservative and libertarian wings of the GOP, and in the process he has clashed with liberal Republican Gov. Chris Christie, who is also viewed as a prospective contender for the White House.

In anticipation of Paul’s visit to back Lonegan, Christie is clearing out of the Garden State. The Governor is taking his wife and children on vacation just weeks before his own re-election, a ploy some say shows that the Republican is no heavyweight in his own political party.

Paul first received national attention in 2008 when making political speeches on behalf of his father, who was campaigning for the Republican Party’s nomination for president. Rand Paul is the first United States senator to have served simultaneously with a parent in the United States House of Representatives.

Lonegan, who served as Mayor of Bogota from 1995 to 2007, is the former state director of the New Jersey chapter of Americans for Prosperity, he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor of New Jersey in 2005 and 2009.

Last month, Lonegan became the Republican Party’s nominee to fill New Jersey’s open U.S. Senate seat following the death of Frank Lautenberg. He is competing with Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the October 16, 2013 special election.

As a supporter of the Tea Party movement, the Kentucky Senator as been vocal in advocating for term limits, a balanced budget amendment, and the Read the Bills Act, in addition to the widespread reduction of federal spending and taxation. Paul has gained prominence for his independent positions on many political issues, often clashing with both Republicans and Democrats.

Paul co-authored a book entitled The Tea Party Goes to Washington with Jack Hunter, also known as the “Southern Avenger” and he is also the author of Government Bullies: How Everyday Americans Are Being Harassed, Abused, and Imprisoned by the Feds.

Paul supports term limits, a balanced budget amendment, and the Read the Bills Act, in addition to the widespread reduction of federal spending and taxation. He received perfect scores from the Gun Owners of America, National Right to Life Committee, and the American Conservative Union.

Unlike his more stridently “non-interventionist” father, Rand sees a role for American armed forces abroad, including permanent foreign military bases.

Describing himself as “100% pro life,” Paul has said many times that he will always vote for any and all legislation that would end abortion, even in cases of rape or incest.
