Petition Opposes Syrian Attack

A local Democrat has posted an online petition urging President Barack Obama and Congress to find an alternative to military involvement in the Syrian civil war.

Democrat James J. Devine, of Rahway, said that military violence will not stop the slaughter of human beings in Syria.

“America has got to embrace a better way of solving problems than killing people and destroying those we consider our enemies,” said Devine. “Syria’s civil war is a conflict between the Islamic sects of Sunni and Shia ~ and neither religious faction can be considered a friend to American interests.”

Devine, a Democrat who has strongly supported both President Obama and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, said that his political allies are misguided on this issue.  Obama has asked for congressional authorization to wage war against Syria and Menendez is leading the charge on Capitol Hill as chairman of the Senate Foreign Services Committee.

“While there ought to be a penalty paid by anyone who employs chemical, biological or nuclear weapons, it is utter insanity to exact that price by adding more violence to the conflagration in the war torn Middle East,” said Devine. “The consequences of military action are unknown. The prospects for escalation are infinite.”

Devine was a staunch opponent of President George W. Bush’s misguided invasion of Iraq in 2003 and he has been an outspoken advocate for full restoration of civil liberties eroded during the post-9/11 period of panic and fear.

“By signing our petition, New Jersey residents can signal to Washington that there is a better way to resolve conflict,” said Devine. “Killing and destroying the foundations of life only cause greater strife and breed new hatred toward our western values. There has to be a better way and America should lead by example.”

“The potential unintended consequences of military action in Syria far outweigh any conceivable benefit,” Devine said.  “Violence rarely solves problems and humanity needs to develop a better way of resolving conflicts if our species is to survive.”
