BRIDGEWATER — The Smithereens, a rock band with roots in Carteret, will perform as part of the Somerset County Park Commission Free Summer Concert Series at Duke Island Park on Old York Road in Bridgewater on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The band’s music has been featured on Miami Vice and several movie soundtracks. The Smithereens’ hits include “Blood and Roses,” “Only a Memory,” “A Girl Like You” and “Blues Before and After.” Their influences vary widely including Buddy Holly, The Who, The Clash, and Elvis Costello. The band’s name comes from a Yosemite Sam catchphrase about Bugs Bunny, “Varmint, I’m a-gonna blow you to smithereens!”
The concert is sponsored by the Hyatt House, and attendees are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, chairs and blankets. Ample parking is available.
