Linden Store Owner Thwarts Would-Be Robber

LINDEN — A Linden deli owner threw a pot of hot oil at a would-be robber yesterday afternoon, driving him off.

Police responded to Cos’ Corner Deli on East Elizabeth Avenue at 2:06 p.m. on Aug. 19 after receiving a report of a man with a gun. The owner told the officers that a dark-skinned man in his 20s had entered the store and displayed a handgun. When the robber tried to open the cash register, the owner took a small pot of hot oil and threw it at the robber, who ran off without taking anything.

Police searched the area but did not locate the suspect. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and police notified local hospitals in case the suspect sought medical treatment for possible burns.

The store owner was not injured, police said.
