CRANFORD — Can you imagine a full size school bus that acts as a mobile playground? The children of The Arc of Union County Bright Beginnings Child Development Center in Cranford look forward to The Fun Bus’ arrival each Wednesday. The Fun Bus has had its seats removed and replaced with fitness equipment for children.

This idea was started by the mother – daughter team of Dawn McGarry and Kari Denton who wanted to promote fitness for children in a fun environment, and The Fun Bus was born. This idea is definitely working at Bright Beginnings. The kids are all smiles as the brightly colored bus pulls into the parking lot.

While on the bus children from toddlers to five years old are lead through stretching and warm up exercises by the fun bus instructor Danny Cruz before they participate in the numerous great activities in store for them. Some of these activities include jumping on a trampoline, running on a child sized treadmill, climbing up the bus’ very own rock wall, shooting baskets using a mini basketball hoop, or swinging across the monkey bars. Even leaving The Fun Bus is exciting; the children exit through the back door by going down a slide.

The kids of The Arc of Union Bright Beginnings Child Development Center absolutely love their time on the Fun Bus. The supervisor of Bright Beginnings, Khadijah Green stated, “It is really all the kids talk about. I think that it is a good form of exercise and it gives the children something extra to be excited about.”
