Jazzville Skyline: “…who was that masked man…”

Rocky-Oby rocky-o

O.K….summer of twenty-thirteen…not exactly the moment in history Hollywood will want to remember…(let’s see…there was “R.I.P.D”…“White House Down”…“Turbo”…”Man Of Steel”…”The Wolverine”…plus so many others that I could be here all day mentioning…)

And most were bad box-office…most simply bad period…(In fact, the only movie that seems to have been a success, both critically and financially, has been the new Woody Allen feature, “Blue Jasmine”…)

Now, of course, if you’ve been paying attention to this summer’s movie fiascoes, one obvious title I didn’t mention was “The Lone Ranger,” which kinda got the brunt of it all, because it was one of the first to flop this summer…if it had come out later, it would’ve been just one of the many…

But…having sat thru insipid nonsense like “Man Of Steel,” truly made me appreciate “The Lone Ranger”…but…I can see why it didn’t work for today’s movie-going audience…

It’s a western…one down right there…it’s also slow paced, like a western should be…two strikes…and it has lots of dialogue, minor CGI…three strikes you’re out…

Even with the starpower of Johnny Depp, it couldn’t find its target…

But…I saw it and loved it…Depp is spot-on as Tonto, the wiser of the pair, and The Ranger himself is played by Armie Hammer, whose dimwitted, good-natured approach to justice may be a bit frustrating at first, but a perfect counterpoint for the storyline…

So…if you get a chance, give it a chance…if you like the Robert Downey Jr. “Sherlock Holmes” movies, you will enjoy this…(and yes, it is over two and a half hours long, so make plenty of time for it…)

Hi Ho Silver…away…
