PERTH AMBOY – On Friday, Perth Amboy police arrested a suspect in a shooting that took place last week in the area of State Street and Harrison Place.
Reinaldo Perez-Rodriquez, 25, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault with a firearm and related weapons offenses for allegedly shooting his neighbor, Edwin Gonzalez, 34, during a dispute.
Gonzalez was transported to the Trauma Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital by EMS with non life threatening injuries and has since been released from their care, authorities said.
On Thursday, July 25, at 9:09 p.m., police responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting shots fired in the area of State Street and Harrison Place. The officers found Gonzalez with multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities.
According to a police investigation, Perez-Rodriquez and Gonzalez got into a verbal dispute which became physical. During the physical dispute a handgun was allegedly produced and Gonzalez was allegedly shot by Perez-Rodriquez in the presence of several witnesses. Perez-Rodriquez then fled the area.
Superior Court Judge James F. Hyland who set bail for Reinaldo Perez-Rodriquez at $2 million with no 10 percent cash option.
The charges against Perez-Rodriquez are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
