Carlos Lopez, 47, was charged with murder in the death of David Campos-Garcia, who was stabbed on Suydam Street shortly before 2:50 a.m. on July 27.

The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 3:43 a.m.

An autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the victim had been fatally stabbed.

An investigation by Detective Drew Weiss of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Adrian Villegas of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office led to the arrest of Lopez, who was apprehended at his home on Handy Street in New Brunswick at 9:19 a.m.

He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Acting Prosecutor Carey commended police for their quick work in tracking and arresting the suspect.

The investigation is active and continuing. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Detective Weiss of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5217, or Investigator Villegas of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (723) 745-3300.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charge filed against Lopez is merely an accusation and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
