Springfield Library’s Great Books Discussion Group Returns In Sept.

SPRINGFIELD — The Great Books Discussion Group of the Springfield Free Public Library will hold its inaugural meeting of the 2013-2014 season from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 19 in the library’s meeting room. This meeting will focus on a discussion of The Indestructibility of Our Inner Nature, by Schopenhauer.

Always meeting on the third Thursday of the month, subsequent dates this year include Oct. 17 (Media, by Euripides), Nov. 21 (The Spirit of Capitalism, by Max Weber), and Dec. 19 (The Misanthrope, by Moliere) as well as Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 20, April 17, May 15, June 19 and July 17 in 2014.

Participation is open to people of all ages, education levels and from all communities. All readings will be from the adult Great Books fourth series, which focuses on a diverse group of classics that also includes Caesar and Cleopatra, by George Bernard Shaw, The City of God, by Saint Augustine and The Overcoat, by Nicolai Gogol among others. Copies of the three volume set of readings that also includes a reader aid are available for purchase at the Springfield Free Public Library.
