Dowdell Library Offers Books & Games For Summer Entertainment

SOUTH AMBOY — Summer programs at the Dowdell Library of South Amboy run through August, so children and adults still have time to participate in this year’s reading clubs. Creative programs for kids such as fantasy crafts, Mother Goose, dinosaur bingo and a fruit smoothie social will be held. Children with the most books entered into their reading log will win prizes. Adults can participate in the summer program for weekly prizes and the opportunity to win an Amazon gift card.

Most school summer reading books are also available, so parents might want to stop by the library before buying books.

The Dowdell Library Foundation has purchased new Xbox video game equipment for the library, and the library has acquired numerous new games, such as Minecraft, Tomb Raider, Angry Birds, and Call of Duty Black Ops II, that may be played at the library. During the summer, Xbox programs for children aged 5-9 will be held Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and Xbox programs for young adults 10 and older will be held Mondays at 1 p.m. A special Xbox Galaxy Call of Duty Black Ops II competition will be held for adults 18 + on Monday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. In the fall, regular Xbox programs for all ages are planned.

Dowdell Library also offers free downloadable ebooks. Just log onto and sign in with the first 13-digits of your South Amboy library card. Borrowing rules are simple: the default loan period is 14 days (you have the option of changing it to 7 or 21 days); the checkout limit is five items at a time; the hold (reserve) limit is five items. When you receive email notification that the item is available, you have up to three days to check out the material. Drop in any time for help or attend one of the weekly Thursday evening Ebook programs from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

The Sadie Pope Dowdell Library is adjacent to the South Amboy High School off O’Leary Boulevard. For more information, contact the library at 732-721-6060 or
