WESTFIELD — Recently, Westfield residents gathered to bid on 39 bicycles being auctioned off by Westfield Sgt. Jason McErlean and Det. Lisa Perrotta on a Saturday morning at the Westfield Memorial Pool. The Westfield Police Department holds bicycle auctions annually and the bicycles auctioned on this day were found or abandoned in Westfield, yet not registered as missing or stolen. The Westfield Police Department also offered a bike rodeo which included helmet and safe biking instruction.

The Westfield Traffic Safety Officers support the Children’s Specialized Hospital Safe Kids Union County “B Hard Headed” injury prevention campaign by issuing safety information and hard hats or helmets to those in need. Safe Kids at Children’s Specialized Hospital urges everyone to join the “B Hard Headed” Campaign to prevent brain injury. Wear a hard hat when biking, roller-skating, inline skating, or riding a scooter. Helmets reduce the risk of severe brain damage by up to 88 percent.

“B Hard Headed” injury prevention campaign is supported by The Union County Traffic Officers Association and Traffic Safety Coordinator, The Freeholders of Union County, AAA, Westfield Regional Department of Health, and the Departments of Health in Clark, Linden, Rahway, and Roselle, the Public Health Nurses of Elizabeth, and the Brain Injury Alliance of N.J.

For information on joining “B Hard Headed,” contact Susan Driscoll, community educator for Children’s Specialized Hospital and Coordinator of Safe Kids Union County at or 908-301-5478.
