Off Duty Officers Help Nab Alleged Bank Robbers

UNION – Off-duty police officers from Newark and New Providence helped Union Township police catch a pair of alleged bank robbers on Monday, according to an report.

The PNC Bank branch on Morris Avenue was held up at gunpoint at 10:45 a.m. on Monday. An off-duty Newark police detective saw a man run from the bank and drop a handgun in the parking lot, while an off-duty New Providence police officer saw a man run away from the bank and passed along the license plate number of the car he saw him get into, according to the report.

Saboor Ali, 54, of Newark and Thomas McDaniel, 42, of Elizabeth, were both charged with armed robbery, weapons possession and resisting arrest, among other counts, according to the report.

The charges against the defendants are merely accusations. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
