LINDEN — A Newark mother and daughter were arrested on July 4 after they allegedly shoplifted $704 in jewelry, clothing and other items from Kohl’s department store in Linden, authorities said.

La Asia Kawana Watson, 38, and Tynika Monay Watson,  18, were both charged with shoplifting. La Asia’s other children, a six year old girl and a seven month old boy, were also present at the time of arrest and were turned over to their father, authorities said.

Loss prevention personnel called police to the store at 3:50 p.m. on July 4 after they had taken the two women into custody. The store personnel told police that the women had placed the items into an empty Kohl’s bag and a spare purse, and then placed those bags into a baby stroller that held the seven month old boy.

La Asia also had a no-bail contempt warrant out of New York.

The charges against the suspects are merely accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
