Booker Chastised For Using Deceptive Slogans

SUSSEX COUNTY — Newark Mayor Cory Booker was criticized this week for using deceptive slogans to suggest  local organizations are supporting him in the special US Senate primary in a county where he is running without receiving the endorsement.

“We are disturbed by the suggestion arising from Mayor Booker’s slogan that he has been endorsed by the Sussex County Democratic Committee,” wrote Sussex County Democratic Chairman Mike Busche in an email message distributed to the four primary candidates.

“No candidate has been endorsed by the SCDC, nor has any candidate been authorized to use its name in connection with the August 13, 2013 primary contest,” said Busche. “Furthermore, the Democratic 24th Legislative Campaign Committee has neither endorsed Mayor Booker nor authorized the use of any slogan implying such endorsement.”

Booker is using the slogan “Sussex County Democrats 2013,” which could lead voters to believe he has been endorsed by the regular party organization. He is using similar slogans in 13 other counties, according to the official list of Senate candidates posted by the New Jersey Division of Elections.
