Off-Duty Linden Police Sgt. Attacked After Trying To Break Up Fight

ELIZABETH – An off-duty Linden police sergeant was attacked after he tried to break up a fight among approximately 20 people Thursday evening in Elizabeth, according to an NJ.com report.

Sgt. Christopher Guenther was visiting a relative when he saw a group of mostly juveniles fighting among themselves on Niles Street near South Fifth Avenue. He got out of his car, identified himself as a police officer and ordered them to stop, according to the report.

The group turned on him, and Guenther suffered minor bruises. His relative received stitches for a cut above his eye, according to the report. Four youths and one adult were taken into custody by responding officers from the Elizabeth Police Department.
