Jazzville Skyline: “…boldly going where they’ve gone before…”

Star Trek…just the name alone embodies the thought of legendary heroes amidst the final frontier…

Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty…names that live in infamy, as well as in Paramount Studios, who decided to reboot the whole adventure with a new crew taking over these familiar, and beloved, characters…

Their first trek, simply titled “Star Trek”, was o.k…not great, but o.k…

The biggest problem with that one was simply getting over Chris Pine being called Kirk…Who doesn’t still want Bill Shatner in the captain’s chair…

Anyway…now this ‘new crew’ has returned with “Star Trek Into Darkness”, and I have only two words to sum this one up…Benedict Cumberbatch…

When I heard he was playing the ‘villian’ role, I was thrilled…

I have been a huge fan of his from British television, most notably playing the title character in the series “Sherlock”…

Now, having been a big fan of Basil Rathbone in that role, I never imagined anyone coming close to my liking, but Benedict’s brilliant portrayal of the super sleuth is just…well, brilliant…

So for him to be cast into the void of Trek was all too good…and I won’t spoil who his character ‘actually’ is…let’s just say that much of the plotline and individual scenes revolve around things we have seen with the original crew…perhaps tweaked a bit, in some cases…

This ‘pastiche’ formula was dreadful when it came to the Next Generation movie “Nemesis”, but here it acts like a bit of an homage to the original canon of Star Trek lore…

…and the movie itself…it’s…well, o.k…not great…but o.k…
