Obituary: Joanne M. Rees, former Rahway school teacher

Joanne M. Rees, 84, of Pompton Plains, passed away on June 18 with her family at her side.

Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Joanne was the daughter of the late George and Ruth Marois. She moved to Newark as a teenager and went on to attend Newark State Teachers College (now Kean University) earning her bachelor’s degree in education. She went on to teach first grade for 37 years at Roosevelt Elementary School in Rahway and was a caring teacher devoted to her students.

She and her husband William, later moved to Clark and then to the Leisure Village section of Toms River before moving to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains 7 years ago. An active member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Rahway, Joanne taught Sunday school and was a member of the church choir. She loved coffee, animals (especially schnauzers), chocolate and her family. She and her husband were never apart and were married for 58 loving years. She was a kind, gentle and loving person who will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Joanne is survived by her adoring husband, William; her daughter, Deborah and her spouse Julie Matz; her grandchildren, Emma and Sean; her sister, Nancy and one niece and four nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan, and is survived by Susan’s life partner, Robert Nicol.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 22nd in the Garden Room at Mountainview Gardens, Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains. A gathering will be held at 10:30 in the Garden Room prior to the service.
