RAHWAY – The city will host two free concerts this summer, Mayor Rick Proctor, the Rahway City Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation have announced.
Celebrate Independence Day on Thursday, July 4, with the first of the two concerts starting at 6 p.m. Start the night at the Classic Car Show at 5 p.m., grab a bite to eat downtown and then relax and enjoy a double-header event featuring the dynamic bands Get Ready and Shining Star, as the night explodes with the sights and sounds of the 60’s, 70’s and beyond. Get Ready highlights the 1964-68 Classic Five era of the Temptations, while Shining Star re-creates the music of Earth, Wind and Fire.
The following month on Thursday, Aug. 1, the night starts with the Classic Car Show at 5 p.m. Then at 7 p.m., rock legend Gary US Bonds & the Roadhouse Rockers take the stage to dish out hearty, historical rock, roll and rhythm & blues. In the sixties, Gary US Bonds records helped define an era of party music with his breakthrough release of “New Orleans”, followed-up by “Quarter To Three” – a number one song with a spirit and energy that would eventually inspire and influence a generation.
The rain date for the Get Ready and Shining Star concert is July 11 and the rain date for Gary US Bonds is Aug. 8.
Both shows will be held at the “Back Stage Lot” of the Union County Performing Arts Center in the heart of the Rahway Arts District. Audiences are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to these free shows. For more information, call the Department of Parks and Recreation at 732-669-3600.
