North Plainfield Teen Wins Scholarship In Optimist Club Oratorical Contest

NORTH PLAINFIELD — Two students from North Plainfield High School took part in the Optimist Club’s Atlantic Central District Oratorical Contest in Reading, Pa. on Saturday, June 1.

Brenda Okereke and Jason Le, both members of Chelsea Howson’s English 9 Honors class, advanced to the final round. Okereke won the Atlantic Central District girls’ division and was presented with a plaque and a $2,500 scholarship.

In March, Okereke and Le won first and second place, respectively, at the North Plainfield Optimist Club’s Oratorical Contest. Three other members of Howson’s English 9 Honors class also took part in the local contest: Nancy Bahnasy, Stephen Barna, and Cindy Aldana. They wrote , memorized, and performed speeches on the topic of “Why My Voice is Important.”

“We are very proud of these students,” Howson said.
