UNION COUNTY — Councilman Adrian Mapp defeated Plainfield Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs in the city’s Democratic primary on Tuesday.

Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich won a landslide victory over his two opponents, Charles E. Mitchell, Sr. and Richard Puschel. Froehlich received 15,806 votes to Mitchell’s 5,895 and Puschel’s 2,066, according to unofficial results.

The organization-backed slate of Freeholders Linda Carter and Bette Jane Kowalski, and Sergio Granados defeated their opposition by a simillar margin in the Democratic Primary. They will face Republicans Marc A. Krauss, P. Mark Martini and Ira Geiger in November’s general election.

In Garwood, Councilman Jim Mathieu was the top vote-getter in the Republican Primary, while Mike Martin bested Councilman Steven Blaufeder for the second spot on the ballot. According to unofficial totals, Mathieu received 124 votes, Martin 119 and Blaufeder 102.

In Linden, a pair of city council candidates backed by the regular political organization won two contested Democratic Primary races. In the 5th Ward, Councilwoman Rhashona Cosby-Hurling defeated challenger Manuel Donelson 343 votes to 229, according to the unofficial results. In the 7th Ward, Councilman John D. Sheehy Jr. was defeated by challenger Michael Minarchenko, 174 votes to 245.

Roselle Councilwoman Christine Dansereau defeated challenger Sylvia Turnage 1,505 votes to 800 in a borough-wide race in the Democratic Primary, while Mark Kirkland prevailed over Joseph G. Auborg 42 votes to 11 in the Republican Primary. In the 4th Ward Democratic Primary, Councilwoman Kim Shaw beat challenger Joseph LeConte 331 votes to 81. She will face Republican Roger S. Stryeski in the general election in November.

In Union, John J. Hackett and Ron Wilburn prevailed over Jodi L. Ombaldo and Robert Deckert Jr. by a greater than two-to-one margin in the Republican Primary for Township Committee. They will face Democratic incumbents Clifton People Jr. and Suzette Cavadas in the November election.

In Westfield’s 3rd Ward, David Oliveira defeated Diane Barabas 226 votes to 74, according to unofficial results in the Republican Primary. He will face Democrat Matthew Sontz in November.
