Remembering the Past by Diane Norek HarrisonBy Diane Norek Harrison

PERTH AMBOY-The following is an excerpt from the book Perth Amboy’s Jewish Community History, Memories, Tribute. The book was published in 2012 by the Friends of Perth Amboy Jewish History, Inc. with Robert Spector, Marilyn Millet Goldberg, Jane Sanders Leal and Mona Shagold. My July 6, 2012 column was included in the book.

Hadassah-The Women’s Zionist Organization

“In 1913, the year after Henrietta Szold founded Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization, in Palestine, she visited Perth Amboy, where she helped to organize the 11th chapter in the United States. Chartered in 1915, the Perth Amboy chapter had 13 original members. For more than seven decades Perth Amboy Hadassah women actively supported the organization’s life-saving and life-giving philanthropic initiatives, first in Palestine and then in the state of Israel. In 1988, as the Perth Amboy chapter prepared to celebrate its 75th anniversary, its members contributed $20,000 to help Hadassah’s causes.”

My thanks to Marilyn Millet Goldberg and a special “thank you” to Jane Sanders Leal, for including my research in your beautiful book.
