CLARK — Advocates for the Preeclampsia Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia, a life-threatening disorder of pregnancy, braved the storm this past weekend in Clark to raise awareness at the annual Promise Walk for Preeclampsia™. The New Jersey walkers joined thousands of other participants around the country that will walk in May and June to support innovative research and raise public awareness about the warning signs of preeclampsia.
The third annual Cranford-area event has raised almost $50,000 to date and had more than 350 participants, who braved the rain to make an impact in their local community. The walk day included opening ceremony speeches from Larry Bloomstein, this year’s Mission Family for the Cranford walk, guest speaker Dr. Joseph Apuzzio, Director of Maternal & Fetal Medicine at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), as well as preeclampsia survivors and mother-daughter walk coordinator team Stephanie and Marissa Steiner.
“We are incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support this community has shown for the families impacted by this devastating disease,” said Stephanie Steiner.
The Promise Walk for Preeclampsia, with the tagline “Making Strides, Delivering Hope,” makes a clear connection with the mission of the Preeclampsia Foundation. That “promise” includes finding a cure, supporting families, and ensuring education and awareness for all pregnant women. The event’s national goal is to raise $500,000.
The support for May as Preeclampsia Awareness Month from the state of New Jersey has been strong, with the receipt of local proclamations from NJ Governor Chris Christie and the NJ Senate, as well as from Brielle, Cranford, Clark, Livingston, Millburn, Morristown, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Westfield, and Union.
“The Cranford Promise Walk exceeded all expectations and set national fundraising records for the year,” said Preeclampsia Foundation Director of Community Relations Laney Poye. “We are very excited to continue the momentum in New Jersey for years to come under Stephanie’s extremely capable guidance.”
This year’s local sponsors include: Happy Family Brands, New Jersey Perinatal Associates, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, TD Securities, the Bloomstein Family in Memory of Lauren McCarthy Bloomstein, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; national sponsors include BabyCenter, ViaCord by Perkin Elmer, Britax (BOB) and Creative Counsel.
