[OPINION] Questioning Diaz’s Motives & Tactics

I, Barbara Sottilaro, am a committee-woman for the 6-14 district of Perth Amboy. My husband, Bob Sottilaro, a former councilman from Perth Amboy found an article about Perth Amboy Democrats online that he wanted to show me as we believe it was about what is happening with Mayor Diaz challenging the Democratic Organization for control.

Mayor Diaz’s Line D for “division” is reportedly being led by Senator Joe Vitale whom I have always admired and supported for his position on health care, especially for women in New Jersey. However, the article disappeared and a search reveals that the website has been suspended. Is this suppression of the press and online posting against the Constitutional right of Freedom of the Press?

I also heard about an article a few weeks ago with the paper using my husband’s letter about Mayor Diaz leading the first page of the paper. I tried looking for it and also could not find it. Also, that letter ended questioning what the 3 men who opposed Diaz for mayor were promised. A few days later we learn they are running for freeholder under line D. Miguel Morales led a recall of Diaz when she was first elected, Bob McCoy was fired from the UEZ, and Frank Salado, who had moved to Perth Amboy temporarily to run for mayor, moved back to Carteret and is now running for freeholder. We would still like to know what else they have been promised for this fruitless run.

Mayor Diaz was given the opportunity to present a candidate for freeholder from Perth Amboy several times. Fernando Gonzalez was willing to run if given her support. Another person reportedly was also willing to step forward but was told the support should go to Charles Kenny of Woodbridge, who won the support of the Middlesex County Democratic Organization at the March convention. Woodbridge is obviously desperate to control Middlesex County and Perth Amboy.

The Perth Amboy Democratic Organization has always worked tirelessly for Democratic candidates of which Vitale is one and I will still work to support all of them. Perth Amboy also always delivers a large plurality for Democrats. In my campaigning, I urge people to vote Line B for the Best from Barbara Buono to the committee men and women down the line in Perth Amboy, Barbara Sottilaro and Ron Mascenik, in 6-14. I also ask that they remember to vote this way in November when it is crucial for New Jersey.
