Metuchen Teen Earns Rating At Philadelphia Fencing Competition

EDISON – Teens from Metuchen, Edison, Fanwood, and Colonia traveled to the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia with Hub City Fencing Academy head coach Rich Beischer on Sunday to compete. Aidan Benderly of Metuchen took first place and earned his E rating for 2013. Fencers can earn a letter ratings based on their performances at public competitions.

To be able to earn his E at this competition, Benderly had to take first place by beating nine other fencers, four of whom were teammates from his own club in Edison. Coach Beischer emphasizes the importance of sportsmanship and positive attitudes at Hub City Fencing Academy, and because of that the other boys were very happy to see Benderly achieve his goal.

Aidan Benderly started taking lessons at Hub City Fencing Academy in February 2011, and recently qualified to compete in the Y14 Men’s Sabre category at the US Fencing Association’s National Championship this summer. He qualified for the event by taking first place in the New Jersey Division’s qualifier tournament in that category.
