LINDEN — McManus and Soehl Middle School students from Celena Spencer’s and Edith Duckett’s English as a second language classes had the opportunity to take a trip to Washington D.C. to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Students had been covering themes such as “Conflict”, “Meeting Challenges”, “Points of View” and “The Human Spirit,” which included learning on the Holocaust. Duckett’s students, along with Michael D’Amato’s Honors History students, also had a follow up trip to the College of Saint Elizabeth to hear the story of a survivor of the Rwanda genocide where students were challenged to learn from the lessons and mistakes of the past in order to have a lasting social impact and act collectively in the face of similar issues and challenges which still exist today.
