SCOTCH PLAINS — Each May, Union Catholic holds its annual May Crowning Ceremony. Sister Irma Gazzillo organizes the event and two statues of Mary are crowned.
This year, Kevin Moran of Clark and Kathryn Smilowitz of Union crowned Our Lady of Grace in front of the Union Catholic building, and Susana Fernandez of Newark and Michael Curley of Plainfield crowned the statue of Mary that was brought into the senior courtyard for the day. The entire senior class was invited to the first ceremony and they sang “Immaculate Mary” and “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” together as a class. Throughout the ceremony, seniors read scripture passages, intercessions, and reflections.
Since Union Catholic is celebrating its 50th Anniversary during the 2012-2013 school year, a photograph from Union Catholic’s earliest years, before the first graduation in 1966 and when the school was separated into a Boys School and Girls School, was recreated at this year’s May Crowning.
