A new survey finds near-unanimous consensus among scientists that climate change is caused by human activity.

The survey, published Wednesday by the journal Environmental Research Letters, examined nearly 12,000 academic research papers published from 1991-2011. Of approximately 4,000 that took a position on the causes of climate change, 97.1 percent held the position that humans are causing global climate change.

Americans have not accepted the scientists’ conclusions so readily. According to a Pew Research Center poll conducted last fall, only 45 percent of Americans believe that humans are responsible for the earth getting warmer, while 43 percent reject the idea and 12 percent were unsure.
