ROSELLE—The borough has received more than $30,000 in 2013 Clean Communities funding, Roselle Mayor Jamel C. Holley and members of Borough Council announced Wednesday. The state award honors government agencies, businesses, community organizations, schools and individuals who are working to make New Jersey “clean and green.”
“This award is an acknowledgement of our commitment to a greener Roselle Borough,” Holley said. “We’re proud of the work we’ve done up to this point. This funding will help bolster our commitment through many municipal initiatives we have identified.”
Holley said the grant will be used to fund cleanups of stormwater systems that divert trash from streams, volunteer cleanups of public properties and adoption and enforcement of local anti-littering ordinances. Money will also be used for public information and education programs and purchases of litter collection equipment, litter receptacles, recycling bins, anti-litter signs and supplies to remove graffiti.
The Clean Communities Awards are a flagship initiative of the New Jersey Clean Communities Council, a nonprofit corporation funded by the Clean Communities Act and private sector donations. The Council works to implement a statewide program of public information and education on the effects of littering and the irresponsible handling of solid waste.
According to the Council, awards are presented to towns and counties that implemented Clean Communities programs. Roselle is currently undergoing town-wide parks improvement and stormwater mitigation projects, as well as embarking on a multi-year beautification effort for Chestnut Street, a major municipal thoroughfare that serves as a community gateway.
“Our community has taken great strides to make Roselle environmentally conscious and beautiful,” Holley said. “This funding will ensure that we continue down that path.”
