RAHWAY — Emmilyne Victor, 2009 graduate of Rahway High School, recently returned to her former Advanced Placement English Language and Composition teacher JoAnn Bertelo’s class to share with Ms. Bertelo’s current students the internship opportunities she has had this year in Washington, D.C.

For her former teacher, hearing of her student’s success brings her great satisfaction. In September, Victor will return to her senior year at Howard University, where she is a broadcast journalism major and minors in political science.

In September and early October, Victor spent seven weeks on Capitol Hill, seeing government from the inside, while interning at the office of U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ.) The past six months she has spent as the evening news intern at Washington, D.C. Channel 5, FOX television. She conducted research for the news team, went out into the field to record sound bites, some of which were used on-screen, and did studio interviews. She actually spent Election Night at the White House helping the news team report. Currently, she is a finalist and awaits hearing from CNN about a full-year Washington internship.

While at Howard, Victor has worked on the student television station WHUT as well as being editor for The Hilltop, the student newspaper. This parallels her experience at Rahway High School, where she was part of Kudos broadcast journalism program, and at the same time Editor-in-Chief of the school yearbook and on the staff of the school newspaper, Rho Eta Sigma.
