EDISON — The Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County has announced several upcoming programs and trips, as well as the continuation of its Bridge program.
Fred Miller will present Lectures In Song on Tuesday, June 4 at 1:30pm. Mr. Miller will focus on Words & Music – Sammy Cahn, lyricist and Jimmy McHugh, composer. He will share information about their lives and careers as well as play piano and vocalize their prolific and often great music. “BRIDGE BUILDER IN PETTICOATS: EMILY WARREN ROEBLING AND THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE” A costumed presentation by Carol Simon Levin is offered on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 1:30pm at the JCC of Middlesex County, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison. She will relate the story of this distinguished woman, who in 1881, stepped in for her bedridden husband and essentially became the Chief Engineer for the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge project. On Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 10:30am, Dr. Myra Gutin, authority and author on the topic of First Ladies, will lecture as part of our Nosh ‘N’ Knowledge series. ON THE ROAD WITH…is a discussion of various presidential campaigns and the way in which the first lady or aspiring first lady functions as a campaigner. The lecture is followed by a lunch of Kosher Chinese Buffet. Dr. Robert Butts, Conductor, Composer and Music Educator, will present “AMERICAN MASTER: The Music of Leonard Bernstein, on Tuesday, June 25 at 10:30am at the JCC of Middlesex County, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison. Participants will learn about Bernstein’s masterful conducting, composing and educating. His importance to American music is impossible to calculate or define. “THIS JOINT IS JUMPIN’: READING THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE” will be presented on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 by Dr. Geraldine Smith-Wright, Professor Emerita of English at Drew University. Dr. Smith-Wright will discuss selected literary texts that articulate the broad preoccupations of this period between 1917 and 1935. Numerous extraordinary achievements of African American activists, intellectuals, dancers, artists, musicians and writers occurred during the Harlem Renaissance and it was a time to put forth effort to improve race relations. TRIP TO THE BARNES FOUNDATION in Philadelphia to be held Thursday, June 27, 2013. The coach bus will leave the JCC, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison, at 8:45 am and travel to Philadelphia where each participant will enjoy an audio tour of the Barnes Collection at their leisure. After viewing the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist “ensembles” that highlight this unique collection by Dr. Barnes, the group will enjoy a three course lunch at Jack’s Firehouse. ATLANTIC CITY TRIPS
Whether you like to play the slots, sit at the blackjack tables or stroll on the boardwalk, a fun-filled day awaits on Monday, June 24, 2013. The bus leaves the Community Campus, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison, at 8:45am, travels to Showboat Casino and leaves Atlantic City at 5pm. The cost is $27/person and entitles you to a Casino Bonus.
