LINDEN — Police investigating the sound of gunfire near Hattie Johnson Park on Monday night arrested two teenage suspects who were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
Officers were on patrol at 10:20 p.m. on May 6 near the 11oo block of Lincoln Street when they heard two gunshots. The officers responded and found an 18-year-old Linden man who told them that someone in a gray Nissan just shot at him.
Minutes later, Officer Michael Burnette observed a similar vehicle travelling east on East Elizabeth Avenue at a high rate of speed. With the assistance of backup officers, he stopped the car at South Park Avenue and East Edgar Road.
The driver, Quincy Hakeem Oliver, 19, of Rahway, and the passenger, a 15 year old male, also from Rahway, were found to be in possession of a .357 caliber Magnum revolver with two spent rounds, and a clear plastic bag containing suspected marijuana, police said.
Both occupants were charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Oliver was sent to the county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail pending a court date. The juvenile was transported to the Union County Juvenile Detention Center in Linden. Police said that the victim, who was not injured, did not wish to cooperate in the investigation.
The charges against the suspects are merely accusations; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
