Perth Amboy Police Officer Assaulted

PERTH AMBOY — Police have arrested at 31-year-old city man who allegedly took a swing at an officer who was assisting with a Division of Youth Services investigation on Sunday.

Ruben Gerena Jr. was charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon with an unlawful purpose, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice.

Gerena allegedly became belligerent during the course of the investigation and started to yell at  Police Officer Jose Santiago. He allegedly swung at the officer. With the assistance of additional police, Gerena was taken into custody. At that time, police recovered a knife, taser and handcuff key from the suspect.

Judge Maria Del Valle-Koch set Gerena’s bail at $25,000 with no ten percent option.

The charges against Gerena are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
