ELIZABETH — Students at Benedictine Academy (BA) in Elizabeth have raised funds to buy and donate needed goods to two area community agencies. The Community Food Bank of Hillside and the Associated Humane Society in Newark were the recipients of the students’ generosity.
Members of the all-female Catholic college prep high school’s “Couponing Club” raised $200 during a Jean Tag Day, then cut and sorted coupons, which enabled them to buy $400 worth of groceries, health and baby items. This allowed for the donation to the Community Food Bank of Hillside. The “Couponing Club” is moderated by Assistant Principal Andrea Banks-Suggs.
Laura Sodano, Hunger Action Coordinator at the Hillside Food Bank, came to BA to accept the donations. She spoke to the students about the work of the Community Food Bank of NJ, sharing that its mission is to give food, hope and help to the surrounding communities. Thousands of families and children are served each day with food, clothes and hot meals. There is also an active food stamp program, kid cafes, cooking school, kids’ closet, food box program for mothers and the elderly, and a Teen Hunger Council. Benedictine Academy senior Kai Alexander, who is currently serving on the Teen Hunger Council as the liaison for her school, has urged all of her school mates to support the local Community Food Bank and “make a real difference in someone’s life”.
In addition, the BA “Couponing Club” partnered with the Academy’s “Acts Club” (A Cause to Serve with a Smile), moderated by Amy Paul. Students collected coupons and then shopped for dog and cat food and treats. All the items were donated to the Associated Humane Society in Newark. Club members traveled to the Humane Society on April 18 to present their donations.
