CLARK – The annual third grade recorder concert at Frank K. Hehnly Elementary School was held on May 1. The students, under the direction of music teacher Jamey Vavra, are required to play the recorder as their introduction to the woodwind instruments.
Vavra uses Recorder Karate, which is an achievement program to help inspire students to practice and advance their recorder skills. As the children master each song, they earn colored ‘belts’ (strings) that get displayed at the end of their recorders. The entire third grade learned to read sheet music and mastered five songs throughout the year, earning five belts.
The finale – and student favorite – was “Crocodile Rock.” The students learned a choreographed dance routine, arranged by Vavra, and the notes to play along with the chorus. The students enjoyed seeing the audience participate with them in the dance routine in both the daytime and nighttime performances.
