BOUND BROOK – Elizabeth photographer Joanne Devine’s photos are on display at the Hamilton Street Gallery in Bound Brook from now until June 6. The gallery, located at 6 Hamilton Street, is open on Thursdays from noon – 5 p.m.; Fridays from 5:30-8 p.m.; Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. and by appointment.
Devine graduated from Kean College with a degree in art, and a second major in religion and philosophy. She has exhibited her paintings, drawings and photography in various venues, including a juried show at the Amos Eno Gallery in Soho.
Her work as an artist was interrupted due to personal and family commitments, but she now devotes much of her time to her art. Devine believes art can be healing and life enhancing; it can serve to amuse, stimulate, intrigue, engage and on its highest level art can be transformative. “Art speaks before the mind understands,” she says.
In her work as a psychiatric nurse, Devine utilizes art as a means of self-expression that can foster mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.
Devine enjoys working and experimenting with various two dimensional media, most recently digital enhancement of images. Her photographs play with land, sea, city, and inner-scapes — dark, stark, and surprising.
