Throughout all the years I had been riding a bicycle, I was a safe rider and believed I had no need to wear a helmet. I thought that it made me look like a nerd. How wrong I was.
In May 1995, I read in an article that May was National Bike Safety Month and all persons were asked to ride safe and wear a helmet when participating in this sports activity. Doing as asked, I was still seriously injured in a race and if it were not for my helmet that day my brain injury would have been much worse.
Though wearing a helmet will not prevent all bodily injuries, it’s smart to use one. It protects the skull and one of the most important organs in your body, the brain. An injury to the brain will never heal like a cut or a bruise would. It will remain with you forever, changing your life and the life of your loved ones.
Today I am 51 years old – my cognitive skills are slower than others and I suffer from Tinnitus, but I am able to learn. Please don’t let this happen to you. Be smart, don’t put your life on hold and use a helmet, not only during the month of May but always.
Helmets aren’t that expensive; you can buy one in a department store or a bicycle shop. I urge everyone to be smart and use one.
