LINDEN — Linden High School Naval Science Instructor Mark Velez, a retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer, promoted Cristian Checo to the rank of Cadet Chief Petty Officer.

The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) is one of several federal programs sponsored by the Department of Defense in high schools across the United States.

The program came into being with the passage of the National Defense Act of 1916 to inform young Americans about the opportunities available in the military and motivate them toward uniformed service.

Velez said Checo, a sophomore at Linden High School, accomplished requirements for this advancement in less than two years.

Cadets promoted to chief have displayed self-discipline, diligence and performance on NJROTC academic advancement tests, performed unit, school and community service, and received recommendations from the Cadet Chain of Command and Naval Science Instructors.
