Hunger Injustice Focus Of May 18 Conference

Updated May 9, 2013: Due to a health issue involving the keynote speaker, Christ United Methodist Church is postponing its May 18 Conference on Hunger Injustice. 

PISCATAWAY — Clergy and representatives of faith-based food ministries from across New Jersey will gather at Christ United Methodist Church in Piscataway on Saturday, May 18, for the first Regional Conference on Hunger Injustice. The conference will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to the public.

Sponsored by The Shepherd’s Shelves, the food ministry program at Christ United Methodist Church, the conference will include roundtable discussions and workshops focusing on the successes, challenges and opportunities for growth of faith-based food ministries.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Onleilove Alston, a writer and organizing associate at The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, where she organizes an interfaith coalition of leaders to provide social services and advocate for vulnerable New Yorkers.

Her address, titled “360 Degrees of Hunger Justice,” will explore food deserts, health disparities, hunger and how the church and individuals can respond to create healthier communities and Christians.

The conference will be followed by a free “Musicfest of Praise” benefit concert to fight hunger. Several praise bands from across New Jersey will perform on the church lawn from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Praise music lovers are encouraged to come to the event with lawn chairs, blankets and non-perishable food items, which will be collected and donated to area food pantries.
