UNION COUNTY — Former Union County Freeholder Nancy Ward is mounting a primary challenge against state Senator Democrat Nick Scutari in the 22nd Legislative District.

Union County Freeholder Chris Hudak filed an unsuccessful legal challenge to Ward’s petition, arguing her residency is outside the 22nd District.

Charlotte DeFlippo, chairman of the Union County Democratic Party, said she was surprised by Ward’s announcement that she would be challenging Scutari.

The 22nd legislative district includes the Union County municipalizes of Linden, Clark, Fanwood, Rahway, Plainfield, Scotch Plains and Winfield in addition to two towns in each of Middlesex and Somerset counties.

Ward, an attorney, was appointed by the freeholder board in October 2004 to fill an unexpired term, then elected in 2005 and again in 2008. In 2011, political insiders pulled their support and filled her place on the regular organization line with Hudak.
