New Providence Mayor Wants Republicans To Pick A Woman For Open Council Seat

NEW PROVIDENCE – Mayor J. Brooke Hern wants to see New Providence’s Republican Committee support a woman to fill a vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of Councilman Alan Lesnewich, according to a report by the Independent Press.

The committee has to submit three nominees to the Borough Council, who will choose one of them to fill the open Council seat. Lesnewich resigned because he has been appointed as a Superior Court judge.

According to Hern, the New Providence Republican Committee has backed candidates for Mayor and Council 13 times and chose a male candidate on every occasion.

“The sad reality is that the New Providence Borough Council has turned into a men’s club, and the responsibility for this failure rests squarely with the Republican committee,” Hern told the Independent Press.
