CONTACT We Care Bets On Community Support For Casino Night Fundraiser

GARWOOD  – Roll the dice and save a life. That is the message from CONTACT We Care, the crisis intervention and suicide prevention hotline located in Westfield that is hosting a Casino Night on March 22 at the Westwood in Garwood.

All proceeds will go to support operation of the hotline. CONTACT We Care relies on more than 100 volunteer trained listeners who take an average of more than 1,000 calls or texts per month, nearly 2,000 in January.

Tickets for the Casino Night are $35 for gamers and $15 for non-gamers. With each call or text into CONTACT We Care costing about $15, gamers will help support more than two people in crisis or feeling suicidal while non-gamers will help provide support for one.

“Every 14 minutes someone dies from suicide in this nation and during difficult economic times like we’ve been dealing with for the last five years the rate of suicide increases,” said Joanne Oppelt, CONTACT’s executive director. “In addition, suicide is not just an adult crisis. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth aged 15-24, the second leading cause of death among college students and the fourth leading cause of death among children 10-14.

“Suicide affects people in all income brackets and socioeconomic sectors. It does not know race, ethnicity or age. This is a true community problem and we hope the members of the Union County community will join as at Casino night to help reduce this crisis.”

The event will be held March 22 at the Westwood in Garwood, from 7 to 11 p.m. Games will include Craps, Roulette, Black Jack, Money Wheel,Texas Hold ‘Em and Let It Ride. There also will be food and music.
