Perth Amboy Vo-Tech Students Win Hors D’oeuvre Competition

PERTH AMBOY — Two culinary arts students from Perth Amboy Vo-Tech have won the Winterfest 2013 student-chef hors d’oeuvre competition sponsored by the American Culinary Federation’s Jersey Shore Chefs Association.

The winners, junior Miguel Guzman of Perth Amboy and freshman Travis Campbell of Sayreville, competed against classmates from Perth Amboy Vo-Tech and students from East Brunswick Vo-Tech, which also is in the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District, as well was students from Ocean County Vo-Tech and Freehold Borough Culinary Academy.

The winning dish was short-rib empanadito – a small empanada — with avocado and lemon zest.

The event, held Feb. 24 at the Crystal Point Yacht Club in Point Pleasant, benefitted the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and the Jersey Shore Chefs Association’s Victor J. Houston Scholarship Fund.

The Perth Amboy Vo-Tech students are taught by chef Stephen J. Moir, who is president of the Jersey Shore Chefs Association.

The Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District, the first vocational school district in the nation, has seven schools on five campuses, in East Brunswick, Edison, Piscataway, Perth Amboy and Woodbridge. Perth Amboy Vo-Tech was named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2012.
