TRENTON—Citizens who are interested in running for their school board and who live in a community that will hold school elections in April have until 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, to file their nominating petition.
The nominating petition – the document that places a citizen’s name on the ballot – must be submitted to the local school board secretary by the Feb. 25 deadline. The April school elections are scheduled for April 16.
According to the New Jersey School Boards Association, 49 school districts will hold their annual school elections in April. (A 2012 law allowed communities to move their annual school election to the General Election in November, and about 90 percent of school districts have made the change. Nominating petitions for communities with November school elections need to be submitted to the county clerk by June 4.)
To help guide citizens through the candidacy process, NSJBA has developed a “School Board Candidate Kit.” The kit features:
- Frequently asked questions about serving on a school board;
- Ethics information;
- Online video and audio programs describing what board members can expect if elected;
- A calendar of important dates in the school-election process;
- And a sample nominating petition.
The Candidate Kit can be found on NJSBA’s website at www.njsba.org/candidacy. The current Candidate Kit contains information and important dates for candidates running for election in April. Once the April election is complete, the Candidate Kit will be updated with information relevant to the November school elections.
Citizens who are unsure whether their school district has April or November school elections should call their local board of education office.
“School board membership is a challenging and rewarding form of public service,” said John Bulina, NJSBA president. “I encourage citizens who sincerely care about children and their community’s schools to consider school board candidacy.”
