CLARK — First grade students in Miss Price’s class at Frank K. Hehnly Elementary School in Clark have been optimizing their reading experiences by using book boxes. Each student has his or her own magazine box to fill with books that are on their independent reading level, guided reading books from their lessons, and books of interest. Students go “book shopping” once a week in the leveled classroom library. Books are chosen and stored in the boxes so that when students engage in independent reading, they can pull the books out of the boxes, and no time is wasted choosing books. Students also work on fluency by rereading the familiar texts in their book boxes. The students are excited each week to choose new books! Pictured from the left are Domenick Lettini and Nina Sangiuliano. (Photo courtesy of Clark Public Schools)
