CLARK — The Kumpf Middle School boys’ basketball team has turned into quite the powerhouse, winning four straight games following a 1-4 start to the season. First year Coach Caleb Bain now has the team standing with a 5-4 record.
The run started with a 39-33 win in Rahway, followed by a huge upset vs. Plainfield at home. The Cougars led by 19 at one point and finished with a 57-46 in which Brendan Stanzione scored 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks. The Kumpf team’s next victim was Elizabeth South, who were defeated by a final score of 53-42. Stanzione again led the way with 11 points and 17 rebounds and George Visconti added 15 in the win.
The latest team to fall was Berkeley Heights; the Cougars once held a lead of 35 before finishing with a 67-49 victory. The team looks to continue its success this week with games vs. Cranford, Linden and Mountainside.
Bain credits the turn around to the players hard work, commitment and stiff defense. The Cougars’ goal is to finish the season with at least ten wins after winning just five games in the past three seasons combined.
