The NJ Medical Assistance Advisory Council, a group whose function is to provide the Governor with recommendations regarding Medicaid, recently added its voice to the swelling chorus backing Medicaid expansion in NJ.

In affirming its strong support, the group argues that this opportunity is historic in its potential benefit to the state, its residents, and its economy, and that the $2 billion being provided by the federal government to fund Medicaid expansion is too significant to the state’s economy to turn away.

Expanding Medicaid, the group maintains, would present a uniquely cost-effective way to provide health care coverage to those New Jerseyans who are currently unable to afford it. This includes over 59,000 residents between the ages of 50 and 64, many of whom have lost their jobs or are struggling in jobs without health benefits, yet don’t currently qualify for Medicaid health coverage.

AARP urges Governor Christie to accept the recommendation of the Advisory Council and take advantage of this golden opportunity to provide New Jerseyans with a highly cost-effective affordable health care option.
